Hello,
Thanks for sharing your situation and question with us. We have received a contribution from one of our legal researchers.
Unfortunately, if you are going to apply for sponsorship for your parents to get permanent residence in Canada, it is not likely that your parents will not be able to remain in Canada for the length of time required to process your application.
Currently, CIC’s Case Processing Centres (CPC) take about 32 months to process only the Canadian part of sponsorship applications for parents and grandparents, after which your parents will still have to go through an interview outside Canada (either in their country of origin or in the United States).
For more information and to obtain a sponsorship application package, go to the CIC website in the Sponsoring your family: Eligible relatives—How to apply section.
While waiting for your sponsorship application to be processed, your parents may come to Canada as visitors (in which case the usual time one is allowed to remain in Canada is up to six months, though every case is different and remains up to the discretion of immigration officials at the border).
If you would like them to stay longer than the time allowed for visitors, you may apply to extend their stay.
You can find more information on applying for such extensions on the CIC website in the Application to change conditions or extend your stay in Canada as a visitor section.
As to your second question, having a U.S. Green Card will give your parents no advantage in terms of their actual application; however, it may help speed up the application process in that going through their interview in the United States rather than their country of origin may be faster.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
