Durham Region (also known as the Regional Municipality of Durham) is located in southern Ontario, in close proximity to Toronto. It is accessible by two major highways and the Go Transit system, which allows many of its residents to commute to Toronto for work.
The population of the entire region was 608,124 in 2011, with the highest population density found in the areas of Ajax, Oshawa, Pickering and Whitby. The region has a variety of communities including urban centres as well as smaller towns and villages.
