New Canada Child Benefit Starting in July

Tuesday, June 21, 2016

The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is a monthly tax-free payment for families with children under the age of 18. It will replace the Canada child tax benefit (CCTB), national child benefit supplement (NCBS), and the universal child care benefit (UCCB). The CCB is expected to take effect July 1, 2016.

Ontario has taken steps to ensure that the full amount of the CCB benefit will be paid directly to families and will not affect the amount of, or eligibility for:

  • Ontario Works benefits
  • Ontario Disability Support Program benefits
  • Child care subsidies under the Child Care and Early Years Act
  • Healthy Smiles Ontario, the province’s dental program for low-income youth
  • Rent-geared-to-income subsidies
  • Portable housing benefits.

The first CCB payment will be issued on July 20, 2016 (subject to Parliamentary approval). The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will issue the last regular CCTB and UCCB payments on June 20, 2016. If you get your payments by direct deposit, this will continue.
