New Eviction Protections for Tenants

Tuesday, September 5, 2017

As of September 1st, 2017, there are stricter rules for when landlords want to evict their tenants so that they or a family member want to live in the unit.

Under the new rules, if your landlord ends your tenancy for this reason they must give you 1 month’s rent or offer you another rental unit that is similar in value. If your landlord rents the unit instead of using it to live in, they could be fined up to $25,000 for unfairly evicting you. The new rules are intended to protect tenants from landlords who terminate their tenancy to rent out the unit at a higher rate or use it for short-term rentals.
