New Supports Available for Adoptive Families in Ontario

Friday, November 4, 2016

The Ontario Government has introduced new supports for families with adopted children as part of Adoption Awareness Month. Changes include more adoption recruitment staff, additional health benefits and mentoring resources, and a new grant for postsecondary education.

To help families looking to adopt a child, 15 new adoption recruiters will connect parents with children and youth from Crown wards. Children from Crown wards live in temporary foster homes because they have experienced abuse or have been at risk. The Province of Ontario has also partnered with Wendy’s Wonderful Kids to help support the new recruiters.

In order to support the transition and well-being of adoptive families, Ontario provides:

  • Financial support for medical drugs and dental care
  • Mentoring resources for adoptive parents and family members
  • Specialized training for parents who adopt through children’s aid societies

In addition, a new Living and Learning Grant has been created to help families support adopted children enrolled in a full-time postsecondary program.

You can find more information about these support programs in Ontario’s Ministry of Children and Youth Services website. You can also find information on how to sponsor adopted children on Settlement.Org.
