Police Warning of Telephone Scam

Tuesday, July 19, 2016

The Waterloo Regional Police Service has issued a public warning about a telephone scam.

In this scam, residents have been receiving phone calls from someone who falsely claims to be from "Immigration Canada". The caller demands $2,500 for a voucher and threatens the resident by saying that the police will come to their home if they don't pay. The caller then places an emergency call to the police, falsely identifying themselves as the resident and requests immediate assistance at their home. This is being used as a strategy to intimidate the resident into paying the funds.

It is important to be aware of telephone scams and not to provide any personal information or money over the phone. If you receive a call like this, please contact the Waterloo Regional Police Service.
