Changes to Official Documents for Gender Inclusivity

Wednesday, June 29, 2016

The Government of Ontario is changing the display information on health cards and driver's licenses to include people with trans and non-binary gender identities.

Starting from June 13, the Ontario health card will no longer display your sex information. In 2017, you will have the option to display an "X" as your gender identifier on your driver's license card if you do not exclusively identify as male or female, or you can continue to display "M" for male and "F" for female.

Both your health card and driver's license will remain valid after these changes and you can continue to use them normally.

If you want to get involved with further changes on the display of gender information or gender policies in Ontario, you can sign up online to participate in public consultations this summer.

You can also find more information on this topic on Settlement.Org's Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity section.
