Changes to Rent Increase Guidelines

Rules about how much landlords can increase rent costs have changed in Ontario. Under the new Rental Fairness Act, any rent increases given to tenants since April 20, 2017 must meet the annual rent increase guideline of 1.5%. Buildings constructed after November 1, 1991 are no longer excluded from this rule.

The new rule means that landlords cannot increase rent costs for any property by more than 1.5% of the current monthly rent amount in 2017. Each year the rent control guideline is different.
