Your Path to Becoming a Chartered Accountant (CA) in Ontario

This section of the website will help you determine your path to becoming a Chartered Accountant in Ontario, depending on your professional education and affiliation.

It is important that you review each section below:

If you are a current or past member of a professional accounting body outside Canada, you may be exempt from some or most of the requirements to become a CA in Ontario.

Please Note:
To determine your individual path to becoming a CA, you first need to find out if your accounting body outside Canada is "designated," "non-designated," or "non-assessed" by the International Qualifications Appraisal Board. To find out, review the Your Accounting Body section. Then select the option below that best describes you.

Path 1

Member or past member of a designated accounting body (including designated U.S. State Boards of Accountancy)

  • I am a current or past member of a designated accounting body outside Canada
  • I have passed the final qualifying examination for membership in my accounting body
  • I have at least 24 months of work experience that is recognized for credit by my accounting body

Certified Public Accountant with a U.S. State Board of Accountancy

  • I am a Certified Public Accountant with a U.S. State Board of Accountancy
  • I have less then 24 months of work experience that is recognized for credit by my accounting body

  • I am a member or past member of a non-designated accounting body outside Canada
  • I have three years of work experience in accounting, business, or related areas

Your Path to Becoming a CA: Member or past member of a non-designated accounting body in the United Kingdom (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, or Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland)

  • I have three years of work experience in accounting, business, or related areas
