More Countries Added to the Designated Countries of Origin List
Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has announced that 5 new countries: Liechtenstein, Monaco, Romania and San Marino, are now part of the Designated Countries of Origin (DCO) list as of October 10, 2014.

Three New Job-Protected Leaves To Come Into Effect
On October 29, 2014, Bill 21, the Employment Standards Amendment Act, comes into force. This includes the Family Caregiver, Critically Ill Child Care, and Crime-Related Child Death or Disappearance Leaves.

Ontario is helping launch Fire Prevention Week 2014 and encouraging families to test their smoke alarms to make sure they are working.Functioning smoke alarms can increase chances of surviving a fire by up to 50%.

Oshawa Family Law Service Centre Opens
Eligible individuals who live in the Durham Region or have a court case at the Oshawa court can now receive legal help at the new Family Law Service Centre. The centre also provides referrals to other community services.

New Tax Credit to Benefit Farmers and Communities
The Food Donation Tax Credit for Farmers is giving farmers a tax credit valued at 25% of the fair market value of the agricultural products they donate to community food programs, including food banks and student nutrition programs.

The Government of Ontario would like to reminder drivers and passengers of the importance of wearing a seatbelt in order to stay safe on the road. It is the law for everyone in a vehicle to wear a seatbelt. Young children may also need to use car seats.
