Citizenship Rights and Responsibilities

All Canadians have certain rights and responsibilities that are based on Canadian laws, traditions and shared values. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is the part of the Constitution that legally protects the basic rights and freedoms of all Canadians.

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees to all Canadian citizens:

  • the right to vote in federal and provincial elections
  • the right to be a candidate in federal and provincial elections
  • the right to enter, remain in or leave Canada
  • the right to earn a living and reside in any province
  • the right to learn in either of the two official languages
  • the right to a fair trial
  • basic freedoms, such as freedom of thought, freedom of speech, and freedom of peaceful assembly.

Canadian citizens also have other rights and privileges. They:

  • can have a Canadian passport
  • may be the first to be considered for some forms of assistance, such as grants and scholarships to scientists, artists and students.

Having these rights brings responsibilities for everyone in Canada.

As Canadian citizens we:

  • should vote in elections
  • must obey Canadas laws
  • should volunteer in the community
  • must respect the rights and freedoms of others
  • must eliminate discrimination and injustice
  • must care for Canadas heritage
