FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT FILING AN

INCOME TAX RETURN

1. When can I expect my income tax refund?

If you filed your return before April 15, you can expect to wait about four weeks before receiving your refund. If you filed after that date, you may wait about six weeks.

2. Should you wait to file your tax return if one of your information slips is missing?

No. File on time to avoid a late-filing penalty. If one of your information slips or receipts is missing, you must estimate any missing amounts on the income tax return and file it before the deadline. You should attach a note to your return saying which slip is missing.

3. Do I have to be an accountant to file an income tax return?

No. You do not.

4. What are some tips for filing income tax returns?

  • You should check that you havent made any mathematical errors, such as adding and subtracting incorrectly.
  • Make sure you have calculated the provincial tax credit forms properly.
  • You should check that you havent entered the wrong amount on the lines of the tax return that refer to contributions and overpayments to the Canada Pension Plan, Quebec Pension Plan, and Employment Insurance.
  • You must not forget to claim the basic personal amount.
  • Make sure you are claiming the spousal amount correctly.
