Fort Erie Multicultural Centre

Provides settlement, language and skills training to meet the needs of immigrants and refugees living or in transition in the community of Fort Erie. Services include: Needs assessment and information and referral to community and social services * support with finding housing, child care, registering children in school and health care * help filling out government forms including housing and immigration sponsorship forms * assistance with furniture setup * assistance with transportation and navigating the community (ie where to shop, find a doctor, dentist, library, etc) * access to legal aid, legal services and immigration consultation services * assistance with notarization of original documents and language translation Supportive counselling -- provides short-term counselling to clients who encounter difficulties in adjusting to life in Canada and assistance in overcoming these challenges. Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada -- provides basic language skills in English in partnership with Niagara Catholic District School Board (located at St John's South Campus, 54 Jarvis St) Peace Bridge Newcomer Centre -- provides information and hospitality services for refugee claimants on their day of arrival * assistance with shelter and destination referrals across Ontario and Canada * assistance with family connections * information/orientation to procedures associated with the refugee claim process in Canada (located at the Peace Bridge) Community Connections Program (formerly HOST Program) -- group activities for newly arrived immigrants and refugees to welcome newcomers to the community and promote community engagement * help to establish social and professional networks* trained volunteers assist with focus on citizenship, civic engagement and career development * youth leisure, sport and recreation programs in partnership with Canadian Tire Jumpstart Volunteer opportunities available for community projects and events, conversation partners, employment mentors, youth programs and after school programs. Public computer with internet access and telephone for local calls available.
