Change in Age of Dependents

The Government of Canada has announced that the age of dependents is now “under 22” rather than “under 19”. The new rule went into effect on October, 24, 2017. This means that you may now be eligible to sponsor adult children under 22 years old who are not married or in a common-law relationship.
If you are a permanent residence applicant whose children were 19, 20 or 21 after May 3, 2017, you can check to see if you are eligible to add or sponsor your child. You can find out if you are eligible by using the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) web tool. If you are eligible, you can submit a request to add or sponsor your child until January 31, 2018. To submit this request, fill out the web form and choose the category “Permanent residence – add a dependent child 19-21 under Public Policy effective October 24, 2017 to January 31, 2018” from the drop down menu.
