Ontario Proposes Legislation to Close Wage Gap

Thursday, March 8, 2018

Ontario is the first province in Canada to propose a Pay Transparency Legislation.

The Pay Transparency Legislation was designed to create fairness in the workplace for women by demanding a more open approach from employers.

If passed, the legislation aims to compensate you on things like job requirements and your qualifications, rather than gender.

More specifically, the legislation would:

  • Require all jobs posted publicly to include a salary rate or range.
  • Bar hiring managers from asking candidates to disclose what they made in their past salaries.
  • Prohibit any punishments against employees who discuss or disclose their salaries within the job.

The legislation will also require larger hiring companies to track and report compensation gaps based on gender and other diversity characteristics, to be determined through consultation. Once fully implemented, these measures would require employers to publicly post that data within their own workplaces, in addition to reporting them to the province.
