Ontario is Investing $11 Billion to Expand Waterloo Region Public Transit

The government announced this week it will be moving ahead with plans to build a high speed rail line between Toronto and Windsor and is investing $11 billion towards Phase One of the project. They will also be adding an Express Go Rail Service to Kitchener. 

They estimate that travel times will be cut in half along the Windsor-Toronto corridor and the high speed trains will reduce carbon emissions.

Electric-powered trains move at speeds of up to 250 kilometres per hour and will be travelling on a combination of existing and new dedicated rail tracks. The high speed trains are expected to reduce travel times by an estimated 73 minutes between London and Toronto Union Station.

The proposed stops include:

  • Phase 1: Toronto > Pearson Airport/Malton > Guelph > Kitchener-Waterloo > London
  • Phase 2: London > Chatham > Windsor

The rail service will expand regional transit if you are living in the Waterloo region and is expected to be up and running by 2025.

The expansion to the Kitchener Go Train service includes an addition of two-way, all-day Go Trains by 2024.
