New Visas for Travelers Prevented from Entering the US

Wednesday, February 1, 2017

The Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Ahmed Hussen, has provided new instructions for immigration officers assessing travelers prevented from traveling to the United States via Canada. These instructions are limited to travelers affected by the US Executive Order entitled “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States.” The Executive Order affects travelers from Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen and Iraq.

Canadian Immigration officers are now permitted to consider issuing a short-term temporary resident permit lasting up to 180 days for people prevented from entering the United States. These new measures are in place until April 30, 2017. If you are an eligible individual in this situation, you can apply for temporary status in Canada, or apply to have your current temporary status extended.
