What are signs of problem gambling?

People who gamble compulsively may try to hide their behaviour from their friends and family. Sometimes, it is difficult to see problem gambling. These are some signs:

Financial Signs

  • Money missing from bank accounts
  • Valuables or money mysteriously disappear
  • The person takes a second job, but their finances do not improve
  • Changes in spending priorities and habits
  • Cashing in RRSPs or insurance plans

Time Changes

  • Neglecting responsibilities
  • Being late for work or other personal commitments
  • Long periods of time that are not accounted for

Emotional Signs

  • Withdrawal from friends
  • Personality changes
  • Depression and anxiety

Behaviour Changes

  • Not attending family events or leaving early
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Preoccupation
  • Boredom
  • Deception or lying
