Creating a Safety Plan

This guide has many suggestions and ideas that an abused woman can use to create a safety plan for herself and her children.

Although you do not have control over your ex-partner or partner's violence, it is possible to increase your and your children's safety. Many women have escaped and survived abusive situations. This information package was put together by women who have survived and offer their advice to you.

This guide has information about identifying action steps to increase your safety, and preparing in advance for the possibility of further violence. It has information on creating:

  • A safer environment at home, in the neighbourhood and at work
  • An emotional safety plan
  • A child's safety plan
  • A plan of what to do during a violent incident
