How can I prepare for the citizenship test?

To become a Canadian citizen you must pass the Canadian citizenship test. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) administers this test.

This is a multiple-choice test with questions about Canada. This includes questions about Canada's history, geography, political system, national symbols, identity and values, and of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

The test covers many topics from Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship.

Citizenship Classes

To prepare for the test, you can take a citizenship class.

Citizenship classes are generally free or low cost and cover topics such as:

  • Canadian geography
  • Canadian economics
  • Canadian history
  • Canadian government (3 levels)
  • Voting in Canada
  • Rights and responsibilities of citizenship
  • Canadian culture and symbols
  • Current events

These classes are offered by English as a Second Language (ESL) programs, community centres or settlement agencies to prepare for the test.

Many organizations that have English classes also have citizenship classes. To find an organization, go to Services Near Me and search for "English classes" in your area.

Study Guide

IRCC has a study guide that you can use to prepare for the test. You can read it online, download it (PDF), order a copy by mail or get it in audio or eBook format.

There are online tests prepared by the Toronto Public Library and the Richmond Public Library.

Another study tool is the CitizenshipCounts.ca website which features the Discover Canada study guide, practice tests and flashcards to help you prepare for the Citizenship test.
