How much can I get from Ontario Works (OW)?
The amount Ontario Works (OW) can provide depends on your living arrangements, the size of your family and if anyone else in your family has an income.
The Ontario government sets a maximum amount that you can receive from OW per month.
OW May Deduct Money From Your Payments
Ontario Works has 2 categories of income:
- Chargeable
- Non-chargeable
OW deducts some money from your payments based on your chargeable income. Chargeable income includes:
- Employment earnings or wages
- Training wages or allowances
- Child support or spousal support payments
- National Child Benefit Supplement
- Employment Insurance (EI) Benefits
- Workplace Safety Insurance (WSIB) Benefits
- Other government benefits, such as Canada Pension Plan benefits
- Sponsorship payments
- Private accident or sick benefit insurance
- Private or foreign pensions
- Loans
- Income you get from tenants, including roomers or boarders
- Income from rental property you own
- Interests and dividends from any investments you have
OW does not deduct money from your OW payments for non-chargeable income. Non-chargeable income includes:
- Canadian Child Benefit (CCB)
- Income tax refunds
- Goods and Services Tax (GST) credit
- Ontario Child Care Supplement for Working Families
- Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities
Other Benefits
Depending on your situation, you may also get:
- Health benefits
- Employment benefits
- Housing benefits (called Community Start Up and Maintenance benefits)
- Other benefits
