New Rules and Procedures for Citizenship Revocation

Thursday, June 4, 2015

The rules and procedures for citizenship revocation have now changed.  In the majority of cases, the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) Minister will make decisions about when citizenship will be revoked (taken away).  This replaces the previous 3 year process where a decision was made by the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) Minister, the Federal Court and the Governor in Council.

Citizenship can be revoked if someone has committed fraud, misrepresented themselves or knowingly withheld information when they applied for citizenship. The Government of Canada is also now able to revoke citizenship from dual nationals who have been convicted of terrorism, treason and high treason, and/or spying for foreign governments.
