Alert for Online Dating Websites

Monday, February 13, 2017

The Competition Bureau has issued an alert to all consumers warning them of the ways online dating websites try to encourage people to pay for their services. Like many paid for online services, it is important to read the terms and conditions for a service before you pay for the service. Some “extra” services are hidden behind fees you may not have been expecting when you signed up.

The agency is reminding everyone that online dating sites sometimes use tactics like fake accounts and high profile matches to make you think they have more members than they actually do.

The Competition Bureau has listed 6 tips you should consider before signing up for any online service:

  • Trust your instincts
  • Ask questions
  • Read the terms and conditions before signing up
  • Know which services are free and which ones cost money
  • Understand what is involved when cancelling your account
  • And remember, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is
