Changes to the Immigration Detention System

The Government of Canada has announced that they plan to create a fairer immigration detention system. The new system will have more alternatives to detention, such as a community supervision program and better mental health supports. They plan to use detention only as a last resort.
Consultations with stakeholders will be held this summer and fall to further develop these alternatives and decrease the number of children in detention.
