Winter Driving Safety Tips

Wednesday, November 23, 2016

With winter weather approaching, drivers must adapt to new road conditions. The Ontario Government has shared some tips to plan ahead and ensure that you stay safe on the road.

Prepare your car for winter

You should take your car for a maintenance checkup to make sure it is safe for winter road conditions, such as snow. For example, during your maintenance you can take advantage of the winter tire insurance discount and change your tires for better traction.

Plan your route

It is also important to plan the route of your trip ahead of time. You can do this by visiting Track My Plow and Ontario 511 to get updated information on road conditions in your area. You should also check the weather forecast and traffic news for more information before you start your trip.

Adjust your driving

Given that driving in winter is different from driving in more mild weather conditions, you should adjust your speed and distance to other cars to make sure you stay safe.  Make sure to also watch for ice on the road and that you can see ahead by using your car’s full lighting system.
