What are first language literacy and English Literacy Development (ELD) programs?

Literacy and ELD programs are for people who need to improve their basic reading and writing skills.

Learning a new language uses the skills you have from learning to read in your first language. If you cannot read or write in your first language, it may be difficult for you to learn to read in a second language.

In this case, you might take a literacy program in your first language before you start learning English or French. Or, you might take ELD classes to learn basic reading and writing in English as a second language.
