OSAP Changes for the 2026-2027 Academic Year

Wednesday, April 1, 2026

The Ontario Government is making new changes to the provincial part of OSAP (The Ontario Student Assistance Program). These changes will start on August 1, 2026, for students beginning programs on or after that date. This will not affect the federal portion of your funding.

Here is what is changing:

  • Students will get more of their provincial funding as loans and less as grants
    • This means you will have more money to pay back and can accrue interest compared to money you don't have to pay back
  • Students at public colleges and universities will receive a larger portion of loans in their provincial funding. Provincial grants will be capped at 25 percent of your total OSAP funding.
  • Students at career colleges will receive all their provincial funding in the form of loans.

Overall, there may be fewer provincial grants and more provincial loans than in past years. You will need to pay a higher percentage of the funding back.

Students will be able to see how these changes affect their own funding when the 2026-2027 OSAP application becomes available in spring 2026.

You can use the OSAP Aid Estimator, once it is updated, to check how much money you can get to help pay for your post secondary education.
