Temporary Rule Allows International Students to Work Longer Hours
Thursday, April 23, 2020
Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced yesterday they are lifting work restrictions for international students so they can work more than 20 hours per week.
If you’re an international student looking to work extra hours you can do so during the COVID-19 outbreak, provided you are working in essential services like:
- health care
- critical infrastructure
- the supply food and goods industry
The government recognizes that students who are already in Canada studying in health, and emergency-service-related programs, including many who are trained and ready to graduate, can be of great help to these industries that need them most during the pandemic.
This temporary rule change provides health-care facilities access to additional well-trained workers when they are needed most.
The temporary rule is set to be in place until August 31, 2020.
For more information on whether you qualify for extended hours of work see, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada’s Guidance on Essential Services and Functions in Canada During the COVID-19 Outbreak.
