Tips for Student Renters

Thursday, September 7, 2017

Ontario has provided student renters with tips for living in off-campus rental accommodation.

These tips include:

  • Know your rights and responsibilities as a tenant
  • Ask for a written lease and make sure that you understand it before signing anything
  • Keep copies of any documents shared with a landlord

If you can’t resolve a conflict with your landlord, you can contact the Landlord and Tenant Board. For serious issues such as illegal evictions or losing access to vital services like water, heat or electricity, you can contact Ontario's Rental Housing Enforcement Unit.

Most off-campus housing is covered by the Residential Tenancies Act. The annual rent increase cap for 2018 is 1.8%.
