Illegal Deductions From Wages
In Ontario, employers can only make three types of deductions from an employee's pay, sometimes called your wage or paycheque.
These deductions are:
- Statutory Deductions - These are things everyone has to pay, like income tax, Employment Insurance (EI) premiums and Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contributions
- Court Orders - If you owe money to the employer or someone else, a court may order that money be taken directly from your pay.
- Written Authorization - If you signed a written statement that gives permission for a specific amount of your pay to be deducted.
This short video gives examples of the types of deductions your employer cannot make from your pay.
