I did not plan to get pregnant. What are my choices?

This can be a very confusing and stressful time. You have choices.

Generally, you have 3 options:

  • Raise the child
  • Place the baby up for adoption
  • Abortion (end/discontinue the pregnancy)

Raise the Child

There are programs to help and support pregnant women (any age) before and after the baby is born. Many community programs are free. You do not need to be married to use these programs. Some programs focus on parents who are single.

Adoption

You may choose to give your baby to other people to raise. A sexual health clinic or your local Children's Aid Society can give you information about how to place the baby up for adoption.

Abortion

You may decide to have an abortion (end or discontinue your pregnancy). Abortion is legal in Ontario. You can get an abortion at a clinic or hospital. Usually, you get an abortion within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) covers the cost of an abortion.

Making a Choice

For many women, this is a very difficult choice. It is a good idea to talk with someone about it. You may want to talk with friend or family member you trust, or a social worker or a health care professional.

Sexual health clinics and community health centres have professionals who can give you information about your choices or refer you to more help. To find help, go to Services Near Me and search for "community health centres" in your area.
