What are summer programs for kids?
Kids can participate in summer programs focusing on sports, art, science and more. These programs can be a good way to make new friends and have fun.
Many communities have activities for children during summer vacation. These activities may be called day camps or summer camps.
It is important to register early, or you might not get a spot. Find out more in How do I find summer programs for kids?
Usually summer programs last for 1 - 2 weeks. You can sign up for multiple sessions.
Depending on your household income, you may be able to get a reduction (subsidy) on the price. Ask the program organizers if a reduction is possible.
Types of Programs
Some programs focus on sports like baseball, soccer, swimming or tennis.
Other programs are for kids who want to be creative and make art, music or films.
There are also programs where kids can learn about science, math or technology in a fun environment.
Day Programs
Most day programs go from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. It may be possible to get extra care before or after the regular programming.
Sometimes there is organized transportation. In other cases, you must drop off and pick up your child.
In most cases your child must bring a lunch, snack and drink.
Overnight Programs
In overnight programs kids sleep over at the camp. All of their meals are provided and they are supervised at their activities and at night.
Most camps have an "open-house," which is a day when you and your child can walk around, try some of the activities, have a meal and ask questions.
