What is a SWIS worker?
A Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) worker helps newcomer students and their families settle in their schools and communities.
The SWIS program is a school-based settlement service for immigrants, refugees, and other eligible clients to meet their immediate settlement or ongoing needs after they arrive in Canada. This program is funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Some school boards call this program Multicultural Settlement and Education Partnership (MSEP).
How can they help my family?
You may already use settlement services offered by your local settlement agencies, also called immigrant, refugee or newcomer services.
Many SWIS programs have staff who can speak languages other than English. They will be able to help you with:
- Interpretation
- Filling forms and applications
- Registering children for school
- Referral to community programs and services
What if my school doesn’t have one?
You can ask your school’s administration if they can apply to the board for a SWIS worker. You can also talk to the school board or trustee directly and tell them why your school needs a worker.
Who else can we get help from?
Depending on what programs your school offers, you may have various other staff members who can help you.
English Language Learning (ELL) Staff
Many schools offer support for English Language Learners (ELL). If there are enough children needing support, there may be classes for them. If there are only a few, there may be individual support. The staff or teachers from these programs may be able to help you navigate school issues.
School Counsellor
Every Ontario school has access to a counsellor who can provide information and advice to you and your child. According to the Ontario School Counsellors’ Association, the mission of a school counsellor, also called a guidance counsellor, is to support students’ well-being and growth.
School Nurse
All schools in Ontario have access to a public health nurse as part of their educational resources. Nurses are assigned to a set number of schools in their area. They can answer questions, provide information, and refer school staff, students, and parents on various health-related topics.
Special Education Staff
If your child has an Individual Education Plan (IEP), they may have been assigned to a Special Education (SpecEd) Teacher or staff member. An IEP is considered for students who need support in one or more areas of education or personal needs. These staff can also be a valuable resource to you and your family.
