How can I get an accessible parking permit?
Ontario’s accessible parking permits (APPs) can be issued to you if your mobility is limited because of a permanent or temporary disability.
There are five different types of permits. There is no cost to get, renew or replace an accessible parking permit.
What is an accessible parking permit for?
An accessible parking permit, sometimes called a placard, is for people with disabilities. This kind of permit is an official document allowing you to access designated accessible parking spots. The parking permit could be for you, as the driver, or for a family member if you help drive them around.
These parking spots are usually near the entrance to public buildings, stores, and essential services. They often have wider spaces so doors can fully open, ensuring you have enough room to get in and out of your car safely.
In Ontario, each municipality determines the rules and privileges of accessible parking permits through bylaws. Always follow the local rules and regulations.
Eligibility
To apply for an accessible parking permit, your healthcare provider must certify that you have a condition that limits your mobility. They must also say if your condition is temporary or permanent.
Only certain health care providers are eligible to certify your mobility needs. They must be a registered:
- Chiropodist or Podiatrist
- Chiropractor
- Nurse Practitioner
- Physician or Surgeon
- Physiotherapist
- Occupational Therapist
The permit is issued to a person, not a specific vehicle. This means you can bring it with you if your friend or family member is driving you. You can use the permit only if it is yours or if the permit holder is with you.
If you use the permit without the permit holder in your car, you could be fined up to $5,000, and the permit may be taken away.
How do I apply?
You can apply online, by mail or in person at a ServiceOntario centre once you have all your documents together.
You must complete part of your application form, and your health care provider will complete their part.
When you apply online, you will be required to upload a picture of your completed form with your regulated healthcare practitioner's signature and a picture of your identity documents.
Renewal
If you have an accessible parking permit, you can renew, replace, or update the information on your permit online, by mail or in person at a ServiceOntario centre.
If you want to renew online, gather your documents before you start. You can also renew through your ServiceOntario Account.
Report Misuse or Abuse of a Permit
Municipal and provincial law enforcement officers oversee the use and enforcement of accessible parking areas.
If you suspect someone is misusing an accessible parking permit or have questions related to accessible parking locations, you can contact your municipality.
