Who does the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA) apply to?

The Residential Tenancies Act applies to most people who rent their housing. It does not apply to people living in:

  • Emergency shelters;
  • Hospitals or nursing homes;
  • Prison;
  • Student residence or dormitories;
  • Units that are used on a seasonal or temporary basis; or
  • Those sharing a kitchen or bathroom with their landlord.
