Tuesday, October 25, 2016

The free flu vaccine is now available in pharmacies, health clinics, public health units and doctor’s offices. Anyone over 5 can receive their vaccine from a trained pharmacist. Children under 5 can get the flu shot from other medical professionals. The vaccine is very safe and helps to protect against the most common strains of the virus.

It important to get the flu shot every year to protect yourself and those around you. Children under 5, pregnant women and seniors are at risk of getting seriously ill from the flu.

The Province of Ontario is also reminding the public to take everyday measures to protect themselves from the flu.

These include:

  • Cleaning your hands often with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Coughing and sneezing into a tissue or your sleeve, not your hand
  • Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces often, such as countertops, telephones and keyboards; flu viruses can live on surfaces for up to eight hours
