How can an ELT program help me improve my business language skills and career?
Internationally trained professionals can find it challenging to rebuild their careers in Canada. Free programs like the Toronto District School Board’s (TDSB) Enhanced Language Training (ELT) can help professionals improve their business English skills while gaining Canadian work experience.
The TDSB ELT program is a 14-week training that combines class work with potential on-the-job training. The training helps you navigate the Canadian workplace standards by teaching you specific terminology that is relevant to your field so that you can improve your language skills.
Enhanced Language Training is essential for advancing your career in Canada and appealing to Canadian employers. Through the training, you will improve in the areas of:
- Business Communication
- Employability Skills
- Understanding Canadian Workplace Culture
- Labour Market Trends
During the first eight weeks of training, you will attend workshops in the following:
- Language Skills - Canadian Business Culture Etiquette, Writing Formal Business Letters and Emails, Presenting information, Negotiations, Networking Strategies
- Resume and Cover Letter Writing, Interviewing Practice and Techniques
- Legal Aid Training
- Using AI for your Job Search
- Standard First Aid Training
Classes are offered in a blended format, with on-location and online classes. The program will run Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM. Two days during the week will be hosted online through Microsoft TEAMS, and three will be onsite. The specific days will be determined closer to the start date.
Onsite classes will be held at either of the two locations:
- 6464 Yonge Street, North York, ON M2M 3X4
- 1470 Don Mills Road, North York, ON M3B 2X9
Both locations are TTC accessible.
By the end of this eight-week training program, you'll gain greater confidence in your presentation skills, job search abilities, and understanding of your industry in Canada. You will also benefit from networking with industry experts and fellow newcomers with similar goals.
Additionally, once you’ve successfully completed the in-class portion of the training, you will have a chance to participate in a six-week unpaid work placement in your field with a Canadian employer, providing valuable Canadian workplace experience.
Who is eligible?
To qualify for the training, you must be a professional in one of the following sectors:
- Accounting and Financial Services
- Office Administration and Customer Relations
- Engineering
- Health and Wellness
- Information Technology
- Sales and Marketing
And you must be one of the following:
- Canadian Permanent Residents (Holders of PR Card or Record of Landing)
- Convention Refugees (With a Notice of Decision)
- Ukrainian Temporary Resident and/or their Dependant CUAETs (until March 2025)
- Individuals assisted in their departure out of the Palestinian Territories by the Government of Canada between November 1, 2023, and December 31, 2024, or Individuals came to Canada as temporary residents through the special measures for extended family in Gaza (MOME2023)
Other document requirements:
- Language Assessment Document (CLB 6+ or completion of LINC Level 5. IELTS not accepted)
- Copy of Resume with relevant international experience, education, or training in the selected program sector.
Before you can be admitted to the program, you must undergo a pre-screening to determine your suitability and commitment to the 14-week training. Please submit a copy of your resume and immigration document along with your sector of interest.
